Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do you offer gift cards?
    Yes, we offer digital gift cards that can be redeemed for any of our products. They make great gifts for family and friends to preserve treasured artworks. You can purchase a gift card from the store just like any other of our products. We offer gift cards with these values: R250 R500 R1000 R1500 R2000 After purchase, your card will will be sent to you via email. You can then either forward that email to the intended receiver, or you can send us an email to request a print-ready card design that you can print out to give to the receiver in-person. These gift cards can be used as payment for any purchase on our online store, and will remain usable until the money on it has ran out. Our gift cards don't expire.
  • Can I order more than one book at a time?
    Absolutely! You can order multiple books in one transaction. Just select the desired quantity during checkout, or contact us if you have special requests.
  • Can I order more than one copy of the same book at checkout?
    Yes, you can request additional copies of your photobook at a discounted rate. If you indicate your interest during checkout (there is a checkbox you must select for this before adding to cart), we’ll reach out to confirm the quantity after your order is placed. The more copies you order, the lower the cost per additional book.
  • How long will it take until my order is complete?
    Our process can be split up into 4 parts, which each have separate timelines: Sending your art: One of our courier partners will pick up your art one business day after you have prepared and packed them and let us know about it. The shipping of your art will then take 2-5 business days until it reaches Memento HQ. Memento Magic: The part where we photograph, edit and design your book layout will take 1-2 weeks, depending on the amount of art involved. Print & Pack: The printing takes anywhere from 5-7 business days, and then it is packaged, which takes no longer than two days. Delivery: Once your order is ready for delivery, we tell your chosen courier service to come and pick it up, and it could take 2-7 business days - depending on the service level you selected. All-in-all, the whole process can take about 4-5 weeks - BUT it will likely be on the shorter end of that if everything goes smoothly. We do communicate timeline updates throughout the whole process, so you won't be left in the dark at any stage.
  • What is the difference between the Digitise Only option and the Memento Books?
    The Digitise Only option provides high-quality digital images of your child’s artworks, which you can download. This option doesn’t include a physical product and is perfect if you need to reduce clutter but aren’t ready for a printed book. Memento Books, however, results in a physical softcover book showcasing the artworks. These books do not automatically include digital files. If you have more artworks than a book option allows, you can add a Digitise Only service for the extra artworks at a discounted rate.
  • How much does it cost?
    The price depends on the number of artworks you send. You can view all product options and pricing on our Products page. For digitisation only, the pricing includes artwork pickup, photography, editing and cloud storage where digitised artworks can be downloaded from. The pricing for this offering is tiered out per 50 artworks, with the first 50 artworks being the most expensive. For our books, prices include artwork pickup, photography/digitisation, editing, layout, printing, and packaging of the final book. Shipping for printed books isn’t included but is payable at checkout. We partner with 8 couriers, and based on your delivery address, you’ll see options available to choose the most affordable or convenient provider.
  • Are Memento Books only available as softcovers?
    Yes, Memento Books are only available as softcover books. This choice allows us to offer a high-quality, affordable product while keeping the finished books lightweight and easy to handle. The softcover also ensures that we can accommodate a wide range of artworks without significantly increasing the cost. If hardcover options become available in the future, we will update our offerings accordingly.
  • Why are Memento books not hardcover books?
    Memento Books are made as softcover books to ensure a balance between quality and affordability. Softcovers keep production costs lower, which makes it possible for us to offer beautiful, custom books at a price accessible to more families. They’re also lightweight and easy to handle, ideal for frequent browsing. If hardcover options become more affordable in the future, for the way this service works, we will let you know and include it as part of our product offering. Our aim is to be the more accessible option in a luxury service offering market, and the best way to be that right now, is by offering softcover books. If you would still prefer a hardcover book, rather opt for using another company like Artsybooks or Bumble Box, as this is what they sell.
  • Can I include a message in my book?
    Yes, you will be given the option to do so when your initial order confirmation email is sent from hello@mementobooks.co.za. In that email, there will be a link to a Google form where you can type out the message you want to include.
  • How many artworks are on each page of my book?
    We price our options based on the number of artworks, not pages, for easier understanding. Each page (usually) features one artwork on one side. If an artwork has multiple related pieces from the same project, you can group them on a single page. Just make sure to package these parts together to indicate they should be grouped. If you don't have the exact amount of artworks than one of the book options, and opt to add in the extra artworks to your book, your book will have some pages that feature more than one artwork.
  • What if I have more artworks than a book option?
    ​If your artworks amount doesn't match a book option exactly, choose the closest option below your total. For example, if you have 75 artworks: select the 50-Artworks book, not the 80-Artworks book. ​ At checkout, you can choose to: Send the exact amount for the selected book. Send more than the selected book amount, with some pages featuring multiple artworks. (+R50) Send more artworks, with extra ones digitised only. (+R150) You can "bank" these digitised artworks for future use.   These options only account for the amount of artworks that are less than the next book option.
  • How many artworks can I send?
    The number of artworks you can send depends on your chosen product option. For Digitise Only, you pay per 50 artworks. If you send more than purchased, we’ll notify you and give you the option to upgrade or omit extras. For Memento Books, send exactly what you paid for. You can also add extra artworks for digitisation if you have slightly more at home than the exact amount that goes into a book - at a small cost during checkout. Extra artworks must be fewer than the next product option’s limit and can be saved for future books.
  • How do I send my artwork?
    You will need to place your order first. Once you have placed your order, you will receive a PDF with instructions for how to prepare and pack your art for the courier to pick them up (or for you to drop them off yourself). You can pack your art in any box for shipping - even a Takealot box from a recent delivery. As long as the box is still structurally sound, you're good to go. If possible, ensure that your box is not longer than 56cm, wider than 32cm or higher than 53cm. This makes for a smoother shipment booking. You will need to print out your shipping waybill - please ensure that you are able to get to a printer if you don't have one yourself (or ask a friend to print it for you). In cases where you really can't make any plan to print your waybill, we can arrange for a special paperless process that will be a tad more complicated.
  • What type of artworks can I send, and how big can they be?
    You can send any type of artwork, from drawings and paintings to clay models and paper mache. For flat artworks, we recommend no larger than A3 size. If folding is needed, make a soft fold with other artworks inside to avoid creasing. For 3D pieces, ensure they fit within the shipping container. Just choose pieces you can secure well for transit, and they’re good to go!
  • Can the artworks appear in a specific order?
    If you’d like your artworks to appear in a specific order, please number them on the back of each piece or pack them in the order you want, then let us know. We recommend giving us some flexibility to adjust a few pieces for a more visually appealing flow.
  • Can I send artworks for more than child?
    If you’re ordering separate books for each child, we recommend individual shipments to avoid confusion, as the artwork pickup is included in the pricing. If you’re combining artworks from more than one child into a single book, please separate the artworks within the shipment and clearly label them. In the book, we’ll divide the artwork sets with a blank page and include each child’s name under their first artwork for easy distinction.
  • Can I send more artworks than my chosen book amount?
    ​Yes! Simply choose the closest option below your artworks total.   • Is shipping included in the price?
    No, the shipping cost for printed books is not included in our prices and will be payable at checkout. Rather than adding a flat shipping rate, which could limit options, this approach allows you to choose the most affordable and convenient courier for your location. This way, you have more control over shipping costs, and it keeps our products accessible to a broader range of customers.
  • What courier service do you use?
    We work with a third-party service that connects us to eight courier providers: The Courier Guy, Pudo, RAM, Internet Express, SkyNet, Fastway, Bobbox, and Pargo. During checkout, you’ll enter your delivery address, and the most suitable courier options for your location will appear for you to choose from.
  • What will shipping cost?
    Shipping costs will vary based on your selected courier service and delivery speed. Pickup point options are generally more affordable than door-to-door delivery, and express or overnight shipping will be more expensive than standard economy options.
  • Do you ship internationally?
    Currently, we only offer shipping within South Africa. If we expand internationally, we’ll update our shipping options accordingly.
  • How can I track my book delivery?
    Once your book is shipped, you’ll receive a tracking number from the courier. You’ll also get notifications at key stages of the delivery process so you can stay informed about when your book will arrive.
  • Do I get the artworks back?
    Yes, you can opt to get your artworks back if you want to. Once you place your order, you will get instructions to prepare your art for sending to us - it is during this phase that you can indicate whether you want your artworks back or not. If you choose to have it returned: Your art will be sent back in the same container you sent them to us. This will incur an additional shipping charge that you will be billed for once your book is ready for delivery. Your book and art will be shipped out for delivery at the same time, and using the same courier service provider you selected during checkout. We usually keep your art for two weeks after your book has been delivered. This is in case something went wrong with your book, so we can still fix it. After that we recycle the physical artworks, but keep the digital art files and your print-ready book layout for a full year - in case you want your art featured on any products we launch in the future.
  • What if I am not happy with my book?
    If you’re not satisfied with your book, please let us know. While we don’t offer refunds on completed books, we’re committed to resolving any issues. If the problem stems from something within our control—like print quality or packaging—we may offer a discount on a future order. If you receive the wrong order, we’ll arrange to retrieve it and promptly deliver the correct one at no extra charge.
  • Can I order extra copies of my book later?
    Yes, we keep your book’s digital layout on file for a limited time. If you’d like extra copies, just let us know, and we’ll arrange for reprints at the current pricing.
  • What if I notice a mistake in my book after receiving it?
    If the mistake was not in the approved proof, contact us within 7 days, and we’ll discuss options to make it right.
  • How should I care for my Memento Book?
    To keep your book in great condition, store it away from direct sunlight and moisture. If it needs cleaning, use a soft, dry cloth.
